Some interior photos of our hotel room at Old Oia Houses.
View from the bed.
This was the day I became slightly obsessed with "donkeys." Everyone calls them donkeys on Santorini. They are actually mules, but donkeys sound so much cuter and more interesting than mules. So I'm going to refer to them as donkeys.
While the terrace on our hotel was technically private, the people on the busy street right next to us could look in and we could look down on them. The donkey train passed by everyday on the way down to Amoudi Bay and then back up in the evening. The donkey guides wait for no one, even though they travel through busy, narrow streets. As a pedestrian, you are forced to the nearest doorway for your own safety, lest you get trampled.
Donkeys were also used to haul boxes and garbage up and down the hilly town streets.
Down to Amoudi Bay, the best swimming on the island. There's a small cove of restaurants where we ate lunch. The swimming is around the bend.
You know you're getting close to swimming when the trail looks like this. The water was so clear and calm and deep so you could swim around easily. The water was cold, but it was worth it. I've swam in salt water before but licking my lips in Amoudi Bay tasted like a margarita rim.
The steps up from Amoudi Bay are many and steep. There are donkeys if you're feeling tired.
Loose donkeys. the donkeys come down the stairs in their train, but the guides have loosed them and they don't care who are what is in front of them, they just want to be with their friends at the bottom. We were almost run over on our way back up (not by this donkey, it was later after swimming when we didn't have a camera).
Dessert at Melenio Cafe.
A Nescafe Frappe for Hubs and walnut cake to share. Everything dessert-y in Greece has that trademark syrup on/in/underneath it. It just oozes from every nook and cranny. It's a little much for me, honestly.
Atlantis Bookstore, and awesome shop that reminded me of a smaller Shakespeare and Company. So if you find yourself in Oia missing Paris...
We wandered some quiet Oia streets and saw this little guy.
People staking out their spot for the sunset view.
Sunset viewing.
Sunset view from the hotel terrace (sun sets on the other side of the island).
View down from our hotel terrace. That pointy rock is where we were swimming in Amoudi Bay.
My favorite Yellow Donkey beer at Pelicanos, a rooftop bar.
Chloro cheese, tasted like a cross between soft goat cheese and feta. Yum.
And biscuit gelato and a pistachio shake from Lolita's. Biscuit tasted like vanilla x 100 (aka vanilla on crack). The perfect way to end an evening.
